Internet culture dominated this year’s food trends, from the delicious to the downright bonkers.

We moved on from the sourdough starters and banana bread boom of 2020, but social media was still a big player in setting the food trends of the year. What were we eating in 2021, and what did we really think of these fads?

8. Frozen Honey

For reasons still unknown, earlier this year, people were freezing full containers of squeezy runny honey. Maple syrup, corn syrup, and golden syrup made some appearances too. A few hours later they’d open them up before biting into the semi-solid block of cold sugar.

Most were (justifiably) horrified by both the saccharine flavour and dentist-daunting texture of the frozen honey. It’s safe to say that while it looked cool being squeezed out of a plastic container, none of us will be rushing to try this trend again.

7. “Nature’s Cereal”

It often feels like there is no bowl big enough to provide a satisfying portion of cereal. Similarly, there is no bowl big enough to provide a satisfying portion of this particular cereal, because it wasn’t actually cereal at all.
