We Need To Support Small Businesses NOW More Than Ever — Here’s Why

Shopping at local stores and ordering from small online shops is always a good idea, but Covid-19 has made it more important than ever.

Covid-19 has been an unmitigated disaster for small local businesses.

To clarify, this chapter of our existence has not been ideal for anyone. Some of us may have developed a new hobby or skill in government-sanctioned lockdowns, or gotten a strange kick from this shift in normality. However, for most of us, Covid-19 and its effects have proven to be memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Aside from those who have tragically lost their lives or loved ones to this horrible virus, small local businesses are likely to be the worst-hit by 2020’s outbreak.

Most have had to invest thousands into a building an online presence, let go of loyal staff, or shut their doors for the foreseeable future. Without the funding of old-money families, faceless investors, or millionaire CEOs behind them, the wee shops in our cities have been forced to put everything on the line. Some countries have introduced government schemes to assist, but many come with the dread of mountains of bureaucracy or long-term debt. Many of our beloved shops, boutiques, salons, restaurants and cafes have instead been forced to make incredibly difficult decisions.

In the wake of all this, we are beginning to see lockdown restrictions eased in many places. Let’s talk about why the first places you visit should be small local businesses.

We can help make a local family’s dream a reality.

The first reason is obvious; you’re helping everyday people live their dream. The young mum who opened her first nail salon, the new resident serving his native country’s cuisine, the underdog making his coffee passion into a business.

When you spend your hard-earned cash in one of these establishments, you’re feeding into a lifelong goal without any actual effort. You’re helping support and build an individual’s idea and helping them feed their families, instead of making some CEO in a different country even richer.
